Range Qualifications

DC and MD and some other states require range qualifications in order to obtain a concealed carry permit. Our range qualification for DC consists of 50 rounds at various distances, timed based upon the distance. The range qualification for MD consists of 25 rounds. Minimum passing score for both is 70%. Virginia and Utah permits do not require range qualifications, although a range session is highly recommended if you’re new to firearms or haven’t shot a firearm in a long time.

DC and MD applicants need to schedule a range qualification with Discover Shooting. The NRA Range is the range normally used due to its relatively convenient and central location for MD, DC and northern VA residents. Weekend range qualifications at the NRA Range are not possible as the weekend range hours are limited and crowded. I’ll meet you at the range at the scheduled time. If you don’t have a handgun, you can borrow one of mine for the range qualification. The NRA Range doesn’t have rental guns. If you’ve never shot at the NRA Range, arrive early and obtain a range card (one time requirement). Hours are noted below, but are subject to change.

Things to bring to the range or purchase/obtain at the range:

  • Photo ID, as in a driver’s license.

  • Handgun if you have one. If you don’t have one, you can shoot one of mine. For DC and MD, it is NOT necessary to qualify with the handgun you plan to carry.

  • NRA range card - Obtain one on your first visit ($10 one time fee)

  • Minimum of 50 rounds of ammunition. Ammo can generally be purchased at the range. Typical box of 50 rounds of 9 mm ammo runs about $20, subject to change.

  • Eye and ear protection. Available for rent or purchase at the NRA Range if you don’t have your own.

  • One large target - available at the range for $1

  • The range fee is $15 per hour for NRA members, $25 for non-NRA members.
